History

Sensus Metering Systems has a history of looking to the future, a 100 year history of innovation. The gap between energy information requirements and meter capabilities, led the Sensus team to envision a metering gateway system that would serve as a platform for gathering data and information from electric, gas, and water meters.

A major water and gas meter manufacturer already, Sensus needed an electric meter to complete their gateway system. When investigation revealed that no existing electric meter fit the gateway concept, Sensus Engineering team designed the iCon meter. This solid-state meter would become the center of the Sensus gateway system.

The iCon meter was designed in cooperation with a Customer Advisory Board composed of key utilities. Input from these users helped Sensus produce a meter that meets the needs of the electric utility market today.

At EEI in 2001, Sensus introduced the industry to their new meter. With the introduction of the iCon electric meter, the envisioned metering gateway system became a reality.

Since then, the iCon metering family has grown to include single-phase, network, and three-phase meters. The iCon meter line is ideally suited to integrate into the Sensus FlexNet fixed base AMI solution. The FlexNet system is a tower-based AMI network not dependent on any other infrastructure. Sensus unmatched reliability is achieved with FlexNet by overlapping receiver coverage of metering end-points, data/message redundancy, and fail-over backup provisions. The FlexNet two-way communications network provides electric utilities with enhanced capabilities such as on-demand reads, remote demand register reset and remote shut-off.
